Introduction
"Sail Fit" is a strength and conditioning programme, developed by Jamie Tout of New Zealand Academy of Sport - Central, for sailors from 12 to 20 years of age. The Sail Fit programme is tailored to three age levels.

  • Sailors who are under 13 years of age
  • Sailors who are 14 to 16 years old
  • Sailors who are over 17 years of age

Individual exercise programmes are developed for each age level. The focus of the programme is on building core strength and on developing physical conditioning. The "Sail Fit" programme is designed to compliment sailor aerobic exercise programmes and on the water training programmes.

Sailor fitness tests

"Sail Fit" is designed to be used in conjunction with a regular fitness testing programme. Sailors in the talent development programme have their fitness tested four times a year. Fitness tests will be administered at the end of winter, early December, late February and at the beginning of the winter. A standard test is used each time with sailors using the results to set fitness targets.

In addition to the fitness tests each year sailors undertake an annual muscle balance screening evaluation. This is completed at the beginning of the season and individualised advise is given to sailors to help rectify any imbalances that are detected.
