Welcome to the Wellington Yachting Association Website!

Wellington Yachting Association is a regional association of yachting and boating clubs that are affiliated to Yachting New Zealand. It is made up of 10 clubs from the Greater Wellington Region. Those clubs have a total of over 3000 members.

The W.Y.A. promotes and encourages yachting in the region and provides a forum for clubs. Check out the Club Details to link to the club web sites near you.

Significant Events

During this season, Wellington is hosting a number of significant yachting events.

OK Dingy World Championships

From 30 January 2010 to 13 February 2010 the World Championships for the OK Dinghy are being held on Wellington Harbour. The OK Dinghy is one of the most significant single handed classes of yacht in the world. Details here.

Sunburst National Championships

From 23 January to 25 January 2009 the Sunburst's National Championships are being held at the Heretaunga Boating Club. The Sunburst is the most popular two handed yacht in New Zealand. For details visit the Heretaunga Boating Club's website at www.sailhbc.org.nz.

Zone Development Clinics

Zone Development Clinics are taking place at the Worser Bay Boating Club on 20 & 21 February 2010 and at the Napier Sailing Club on 30 & 31 January 2010 The camps are open to sailors aged under 21.

Wellington OptiSail

From 27 January to 29 January 2009 an Optisail Wellington will be held for optimists at Titahi Bay. The event is aimed at sailors in their first couple of years of sailing. It is a great opportunity to learn more about sailing, and to socialise with other sailors. For details click here. An application form can be downloaded here.

Wellington Yachting Talent Development Programme

A Wellington City Council and Yachting New Zealand initiative, administered by the New Zealand Academy of Sport - North Island, designed to help increase the number of Wellington youth sailors achieving international success more

Coaching & Learn to Sail

Coaching is provided for junior and youth classes and many senior classes. Refer to the WYA calendar for upcoming clinics.

Every club offers learn to sail courses. Enquiries can be made by contacting the clubs at the addresses shown under the Club Details tab.

Courses for Volunteers

WYA regularly provide courses for volunteers. Expressions of interest are now sought for:

  • Patrol boat course;
  • VHF radio course;
  • Coastal medic course;
  • Teams racing umpires course;
  • Keelboat instructors' course.

Information for Clubs

KiwiSport is a scheme in which the Government has allocated over M$82 to encourage school children to participate in organised sports. In the Wellington Region, the scheme is administered by Sport Wellington.

The Organisation Development Tool is a programme developed by SPARC to assess the performance of sporting organisations and to recommend improvements. The programme is offered by Yachting New Zealand.

What Wellington sailors have been doing

Congratulations to the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club team for winning the New Zealand National Keel Boat Championships. The team comprised Josh Junior (skipper), Jonathan Clough, Matthew Clough, Luke O'Connell and Matthew Steven
