Welcome to the Wellington Yachting Association Website!

Wellington Yachting Association is the body supporting yacht clubs and their members in the Greater Wellington Region. Its committee is made up of the 12 Yacht Clubs. The W.Y.A.'s main activities are on promotion and co-ordination of yachting for the development of sailing with increased numbers in participation to high performance. The W.Y.A. ensures that a comprehensive sailing programme for the region is established each season between the Yachting and Boating Clubs with delivery of this programme including further development and coaching initiatives. Wellington Yachting Association Coaching Clinics in association with Titahi Bay Boating Club’s 2008 Winter Series

The Titahi Bay Boating Club recently announced details of its 2008 Winter Series which runs from Sunday 1st June.

The Wellington Yachting Association (WYA) as part of its objective to support and develop yachting in Wellington and Titahi Bay Boating Club (TBBC) are organising afternoon coaching clinics, subject to demand, in association with TBBC’s Winter Series. Registrations for the Clinics are now being accepted. Those wishing to participate are asked to complete the Registration of Intention to Participate form and return it to the WYA Coaching Co-ordinator, Steve Macris smacris@paradise.net.nz as soon as possible.

Titahi Bay Boating Club  2008 Winter Series

The Titahi Bay Boating Club  commence on Sunday the 1st June. This is open to all dinghy sailors from the Wellington (and beyond) and is a popular venue for continuing to sail at through the winter months.

W.Y.A./Burnsco Marine Wellington Anniversary Regatta 19th, 20th & 21st January 2008

The Burnsco Marine Wellington Regatta was held during Wellington Anniversary Weekend. This event was also the Wellington Provincial Championships for all dinghy classes, keel boats divisions, trailer yachts and Radio Controlled Yachts. 74 boats sailed at Heretaunga Boating Club and keel boats, trailer yachts and radio controlled yachts were sailed at Lowry Bay Yacht Club. UPCOMING EVENTS

SAiLWAGS for WOMEN ON WATER AT RPNYC

The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club in association with YNZ Women on Water will be scheduling further SAiLWAG events into 2008. The programme is designed to give women a taste of sailing on Wellington Harbour on the Sailing Academy Yachts. Go for a 2 hour sail and then be entertained by a stimulating guest speaker during lunch. The last 2 SAiLWAGS attracted 48 ladies and all said they would recommend it to a friend. Check out "SAilWAGS" course under RPNYC Sailing Academy. Should no sheduled SAiLWAGS be noted on the site and you are wishing to go for a sail, contact Matt Wood ph 384 8700 for the next available session.

Wellington Sailors Home from ISAF Youth Worlds with a Silver Medal for Josh Junior

New Zealand won two silver medals at the ISAF Youth World Championships in Kingston Canada and came third in the Volvo Trophy for overall team performance with all team members finishing in the top ten. Josh Junior of Worser Bay Boating Club, sailing the single handed laser, brought home one of the two silver medals. Josh sailed a consistent race in his fleet of 38 boats. This was Josh's last year as youth. The other team members results included Cushla Hume-Merry in the Laser Radial (10th - 34 boats) Sarah Berry and Emma Berry in the 29er (9th - 18 boats) Tim Coltman in the Hobie (6th - 15 boats). Cushla Hume-Merry, Emma and Sarah Berry and Tim Coltman all can qualify for the ISAF Youth Worlds next year in Denmark 2008.

A Wellington City Council and Yachting New Zealand initiative, administered by the New Zealand Academy of Sport - North Island, designed to help increase the number of Wellington youth sailors achieving international success more

2008 Secondary School Championships

This was recently held at the Plimmerton Boating Club  with sailors representing schools from around the region. The overall winners were  Scots College with Wanganui Colliegate 2nd and Paraparumu College 3rd.

SPORTING AWARDS

A number of our Wellington sailors have received awards in their region for sailing. This includes:

Emma Berry & Sara Berry - Wairarapa - Premier College Award & Wairarapa Regional Premier Award

Josh Junior - Dominion Post College Sport Wellington - Premier Award

Cushla Hume-Merry - Dominion Post College Sport Wellington Yachtswoman Award

Other sailors nominated were Benn Hanns, Josh Porebski, Matthew Stevens, Leah Moncheur and Hayley Hume-Merry. In addition to the sailing awards, two Yachting New Zealand Merit Awards have been awarded to two Wellington Volunteers. Gary Wagstaff for his services to yachting & Dean Stanley for coaching.

 

Wellington Regional Starling Match Racing Trials

These were held at Worser Bay Boating Club on the 1st of December. Congratulations to Chris Staub in winning this event and the W.Y.A. wish you all the best in the National Starling Match Racing event.

LABOUR WEEKEND REGATTAS

Over labour weekend there were a number of regattas happening with Wellington sailors participating beyond Wellington.

P & Starling North Islands: P Class (36 entries): Stacey Swanson was winner of the P North Island Championship in Ripped. The Starling fleet of 82 sailors had five Wellington Sailors with Chris Staub 12th; Shelley Pearson 38th; Alice Pearson 47th; Jackson MacFarlane 57th and Oliver Staub 63rd.

Takapuna Seniors Regatta: Laser Radial(22 entries): Cushla Hume-Merry 2nd overall 1st female; Rowan Swanson 16th; Josh Porebski 18th. Laser (20 entries) Josh Junior 5th; Matthew Stevens 13th; Andrew Dellabarca 17th.

OK Dinghy (22 entries) Paul Rhodes 2nd; Karl Purdie 3rd; Steve McDowell 4th; Joe Porebski 8th & Sam Sparks 22nd.

Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club Brother Race: 9 boats started in this offshore race after the first day was postponed. The IRC & PHRF results are 1st Gucci & 2nd Blue Magic.
